چکیده

Morphologie histochemical studies of a number of oxidative enzymes in normal mucosa and proliferative lesions of the large intestine of man have previously been reported (15). In these studies, a weak succinic dehydrogenase activity was observed in poorly differentiated carcinoma of the large bowel. This finding is in accord with other investigations in which a low succinic dehydrogenase activity has been found in a variety of malignant neoplasms (11, 1~). However, since a decrease in activity of this enzyme also occurs in rapidly proliferating nonmalignant tissue, such as regenerating liver (7, 8, 14), it is apparent that the metabolic change it reflects is not specific for malignancy. In contrast to the low succinic dehydrogenase activity of poorly differentiated carcinoma of the large intestine, epithelial components with high as well as low activities of this enzyme were found to be present in well differentiated malignant glands of this anatomic site (15). Similarly, in benign proliferative lesions of the large bowel, epithelia with quite marked differences in succinic dehydrogenase activity were observed in specific components of these tissues. In some instances, the weakly reacting benign elements showed as little or even less activity than tha t found in malignant tissue. In the present report, the results of further investigations of succinic dehydrogenase activity in proliferative lesions of the large intestine are presented. I t will be shown tha t there is a decrease in the activity of this enzyme in elements of all prolifcrative lesions studied. This decrease in enzyme activity would appear to reflect an aspect of altered metabolism common to both benign and malignant proliferative processes of the mucosa of

The aim of the current study was to investigate the histological and histochemical characteristics of large and small intestines of sea snake, Hydrophis cyanocinctus. Six adult sea snakes were collected from Minab beaches, located near the sea of Oman, in November, euthanized with chloroform, dissected and alimentary canal removed, tissues preparaed for sectioning and staining with Hematoxylin ...

The significance of enzyme histochemical patterns in carcinomas of the large intestine in man.

The activities of 13 enzymes in 40 carcinomas of the large bowel have been studied using histochemical techniques. Five enzymes-non-specific esterase, monoamine oxidase, succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase, and acid phosphatase-commonly show much less activity in the tumours than in adjacent normal colon. The tumours have been classified based upon the number of enzymes which show marke...

Biocatalysts in Cancer Tissue

The accumulation of lactic acid in tumor tissue (15) suggests an inadequacy in the oxidative mechanism. A deficiency of one of the components of the oxidative mechanism, cytochrome c, was demonstrated in the first paper of this series (6). The present article reports the decreased activities of succinic dehydrogenase and of cytochrome oxidase in tumor tissues. These enzymes together with cytoch...

The Metabolism of the Kidney in Experimental Renal Hypertension

These investigations are part of an attempt to study and interpret the intermediary metabolism of the kidneys in experimental renal hypertension. Hypertension was produced in dogs by the clamping procedure of Goldblatt and associates or by the silk perinephritis method of Page. Enzymatic studies were made by means of Warburg's manometric method. Cytochrome c was in addition determined spectroph...

Relative Activities and Characteristics of Some Oxidative Respiratory Enzymes from Conidia of Verticillium albo-atrum.

Conidia of Verticillium albo-atrum Reinke and Berthold, collected from shake cultures grown in Czapek broth, were sonified for 4 or 8 minutes or ground frozen in a mortar to obtain cell-free homogenates. These were assayed for certain enzymes associated with respiratory pathways. Malic dehydrogenase was the most active, glucose-6-P and NADH dehydrogenase were less active, NADH-cytochrome c redu...
